About US

We are a non profit organization under IRS Code 501 (C) (3) which has been in operation since 1995 under the name of Lankarama Buddhist Institute in Los Angeles. This institute is operated by Buddhist monks and the congregation exceeds over 600 devotees. The organization helps people of all walks of life irrelevant of ethnicity, race or religion and gives shelter to the needy time to time which is part of the mission of this institute.

During the past nine years our institute has organized many charitable fund raisers for causes in Sri Lanka as well as in the U.S. One we like to mention is the on going project in Sri Lanka under the name of Lankarama Vision Foundation which funds at least fifty (50) cataract operations a month to children and the elderly who are in waiting lists to have this operation performed for years and otherwise would not have vision to continue their day to day life.

Three days after the Tsunami damaged the island nation of Sri Lanka a dba was created by the name of SRI LANKA FUND for the sole purpose of helping the tsunami victims in Sri Lanka. Our primary focus is helping in the re habilitation effort, specifically in the south part of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Fund was set up to be a totally voluntary organization with 100% proceeds to benefit victims directly. The fund would not be burdened with any administrative costs which if any would be contributed by organizers.

This group is headed by Ven. Aluthnuwara Sumanatissa, Sanjiv Gunasekara, Raja Edirisuriya, and Bernard Pieris.

The fund has identified two areas of concentration:
  • Build new housing - Community housing with Government land that is already in progress.
  • Help displaced / orphaned children or elderly

  • At present the Sri Lanka Fund has raised approx. $230,000 of which most of the monies would be needed to complete the first Project which is to build 38 houses in Idurruwa (south of Bentota).

The organizers have been in Sri Lanka for over 4 weeks and scouted out many properties out of which they chose a 3 acre property which was handed over by the Govt. of Sri Lanka to the Sri Lanka Fund to commence construction. This property which is only 100 meters from some of the damaged houses (minimal re-location burden) and also the close proximity to the main road were some of the key elements the organizers considered when selecting the land from the government.

The construction work has already begun (one of the only three housing projects to begin construction in Sri Lanka) and the completed project cost is estimated at approx: $203,000. we expect to complete this project by July 15th, 2005.

The organizers have been promised a 2 acre plot of land to consider the second project, which is to build a Home for the Elderly who have been affected by the Tsunami. This property which is situated in a suburb of the capital of Colombo (Kotte) is considered ideal because of the facilities and the medical care that are at proximity for the elderly.

The initial study has been completed by the Architects and Engineers and a cost estimate of approx. $180,000 has been budgeted for an 80 Bed housing center with recreational area and other needed amenities.

Sri Lanka Fund is a registered dba of Lankarama Buddhist Institute.
